About UNIVERSITY OF ALLAHABAD:

For nearly a century, Allahabad University has had a prestigious position among India's universities. It was founded on September 23, 1887, and is India's fourth oldest university after Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. Sir William Muir, Lt. Governor of the United Provinces, is credited for conceptualising a huge Central College at Allahabad (now Prayagraj), which would eventually become a University. His Excellency Lord Northbrook lay the foundation stone for Muir Central College (named after him) on December 9, 1873, as a consequence of his effort.

The plea was widely and generously received, a substantial sum was donated to, and an address was handed to me in 1869, praying for the construction of a college here." Act XVIII, which founded the University of Allahabad, was approved on September 23, 1887. The University of Allahabad, like the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, began as a degree-granting institution. It had its first admission examination in March 1889. The Indian Universities Act of 1904 confined the University of Allahabad's territorial authority to the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh, the Central Provinces encompassing Berar, Ajmer, Mewar, and the majority of Rajputana kingdoms and Central Indian Agencies. Between 1887 and 1927, at least thirty-eight such institutes and colleges of higher learning were established.

In 2003, the federal government decided to acknowledge the institution as the primary university. Furthermore, the Central university title of the institution was revived in 2005 by the Parliament of India under the University of Allahabad Act. It also designated the university as a National and International Institution of National Importance.
