Until 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute in Coimbatore was the sole Agricultural Education Institute in South India. It was designated as a Post-graduate Centre leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees in 1958. Madurai Agricultural College and Research Institute was founded in 1965. When the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was founded in 1971, these two colleges served as its foundation.

Separate degree programmes of B.Sc. (Horticulture) and B.E. (Agriculture) were established in 1972. A separate Faculty of Horticulture was founded in 1979. The B.Sc. (Home Science) programme was established at the Madurai campus in 1980. The third Agricultural College was established in Killikulam in 1984, and the fourth at Kumulur (Trichy) in 1989, before being relocated to NavalurKuttappattu (Trichy) in 1992 and renamed AnbilDharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute.
